Jewellery Care
Why does your silver jewellery tarnish & how to prevent it?
Tarnish is a thin layer of corrosion that forms on metals and appears as a dull grey or black coating. Although pure silver is actually naturally resistant to tarnish & most ideal silver alloy for jewellery, pure silver is far too soft to be used in it’s pure form for jewellery, which is why it is often mixed with other metals.
Sterling Silver will generally tarnish quicker in high humidity climates and places with high levels of air pollution. Products like perfume, hairspray, deodorant, moisturizers, etc can all contribute to further tarnishing of your silver due to the chemicals reacting with the silver.
Several reasons cause sterling silver to tarnish. Still, the most common amongst those are coming in direct contact with the following-
- Oxygen - Water
- Sulfur - Detergents
- Chlorine - Paint
- Air pollution - Atmosphere
- Household chemicals - Cleaners
- Bodily chemicals - Sweat
The Most Effective Preventive Measures are Mentioned here :
